DJing is an occupation that has been hit hard by pandemic restrictions. Obviously, dropping beats and rocking the dance floor isn’t happening right now. To deal with this loss of business and revenues, a group of 11 local creatives have united under the moniker Recordbar Radio to create and broadcast unique content, especially the underground, obscure, and alternative not readily available elsewhere.
From their live-stream studio, Recordbar Radio (RBR) provides a platform for local DJs, producers, musicians, and labels to share their talents and passions. More than just a live-stream studio, RBR is “hyper-amalgamation of subversive art, culture, media and commerce,” says founder and creative director Jake Stellarwell. The collective’s mission is dedicated to “upending traditional pathways of community building and discovery.”
Since April 29, they’ve produced more than 300 live-streams, featuring over 100 artists. RBR currently hosts 24 resident DJs, with new and returning guest performances each month. On average, they produce 16 shows per week with about 50 hours of new content per month.
Recordbar Radio is currently redesigning their studio and will return to broadcasting on November 18. To celebrate their relaunch, they’ve created Guest Week, featuring five debuting guests, five returning guests and seven resident shows. Starting November 25th, Womxn Week will feature performances by local womxn, with special sets on Thanksgiving eve and a two-hour set from resident DJ Davina on Thanksgiving day.
In December, Recorbar Radio will produce their first-ever live band performance with a Jazz trio led by Asim Nichols.
